Reading and writing are both great forms of communication and greatly influence people of all ages. When it comes to these forms of communicating, there are quite a few different forms, or genres. The writing genres are used for various reasons and are chosen depending on what the author wants to get across, how they want to engage their audience, or what form of writing they prefer. As you consider the different forms of literature, here are some of the most common forms.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that each language and culture has its own literature. Most of the national literature we read can be categorized into American, English, Greek, Roman, Latin, and other various languages or culture.

First of all, literature may be fiction or non-fiction. Writing that is fiction is made up or partially made up and not completely true. Even though some parts may be true, or even based off of a true story are considered fiction. Many forms of writing and reading materials fall under this category. Literature that is completely true is considered non-fiction. Just like fiction texts, there are many types of non-fiction pieces.

A novel is one form of literature. This is a lengthy story, or narrative. It involves action and typically some sort of reality. There are many different types of novels, but they are all fiction.

Poetry is also a form of literature. When it comes to poems, there are many types. Some poems rhyme, while others don’t. Some poems follow a specific form while others are free verse and don’t follow any pattern. Poetry can be fiction or non-fiction, it is all up to the writer.

An autobiography or biography is another form of literature. This writing falls under the non-fiction category and is a narrative about a real person. Similar to this form of literature is a memoir. This is also non-fiction, but is written more like a novel and is typically about a significant event in the real person’s life.

Reference books are non-fiction and a specific form of literature. In the different types of reference materials, readers learn the meanings of words, the locations of various places, and other facts. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, phone books, atlases, and other reference materials fall under this category.

When it comes to literature, there are many, many forms. Some of them are listed here, but there are additional ones, too. Texts and emails are a form of writing and something that people read. There are also essays, lab reports, textbooks, self-help books, children’s books, drawing books, and so much more.

As you can see, people write and read for a variety of reasons. With this being a very useful type of communication, it is typically done on a daily basis, either as the reader or the writer, or both. As you consider the different types of literature, you are sure to find that they are all around you and quite difficult to ignore.
